Welcome to southsidetravellers.ie

Happy New Year and welcome back to our upgraded website. Actually, you won't see a huge difference, but you should feel it in the functionality and speed at which you can navigate and get the information you need on our programmes, staff and work. It's been a really busy couple of months since we last updated this page, so check out the programme updates below to keep in touch with all that's happening at the centre.

Southside Travellers mourn the passing of a fabulous colleague, friend and mentor (10/02/2012)

It was with incredible sadness that we heard of the passing of our great colleague, friend and mentor Angela Stenson after a short, but bravely fought illness.  Over the years, Angela had worked tirelessly to support and mentor us in the development of our services for children and their parents and played a pivotal role in the development of our highly successful "Our Gailles" pre-preschool programme in 2010.  We all remember the guffaws of laughter from children, parents and staff during that time and the fascination our children had with her guitar playing and the story about a pigeon and a bus.  Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this difficult time and as a tribute, we will be naming our soon to be completed children's space "The Stenson Room".  May she rest in natural, great peace.

Great night out at the Muppet Movie Premiere (8/02/2012)

Thanks to Linda's great "friendship" with Ryan (the Tubs) Tubridy, Nigel, Ms Connors, Jackie, Eileen and Jim were treated to a night of glitz, glamour and movie fun at the Muppet Movie premiere on Monday evening. Dressed up to the nines, our "8 - 9"ers were treated to popcorn, slushies and nachos and great seats. There were lots of "hello's", "how are yiz?", "What's your names?" from the heart-throb of the door knobs Tubridy himself. As you can see from the pics, our gang take this red carpet business pretty seriously - and they even got Ryan to sign a mug for Linda as a little thank you present.

27/1/2012: Big Up to John, Graham, Jimmy and Gerry

It's a sad day for us here at the Resource Centre as we say goodbye to four long-standing staff members and CE scheme participants - Gerry Cowen, John Cox, Graham McGarry and Jimmy Moorehouse.  These guys have been fabulous and have really taken on the roles they were assigned, as well as involving themselves with enthusiasm in training and lots of other centre based activities.  On behalf of all the team, I want to wish them all the best of luck in their future endeavours.  You know where we are guys and the kettle is always on.

13/1/2012: Breaking News - Southside Travellers are going to the Aras

Never underestimate the power of the Christmas card!  Following on from the receipt of our Get Vocal Christmas Card and a letter explaining our innovative work with Older Travellers, a delegation from the programme have been invited to meet President Higgins in Áras an Uachtarán on Tuesday, March 6.  Well done to Niamh (Get Vocal Programme Facilitator) for taking the initiative with the Christmas card.

Carlsberg don't do builders, but if they did...

It's the final countdown, the last push, almost there....Gavin, Willy and Wayne have been working flat out to complete our new education and training unit.  It's actually true, it is nearly there.  We were going to upload a picture of the "most amazing fully disability accessible bathroom in the world", but we thought not.  One more week....

DLR to Launch "The Future is Ours" - Integration Strategy and Action Plan On Thursday, January 19, DLR will formally launch its new Integration Strategy. Focused on ensuring that the needs of ethnic groups (including Travellers thanks to the work of our Advocacy and Get Vocal teams), the strategy sets out a road map for the county to achieve better outcomes and improved quality of life for these groups and contains specific actions, some of which are led by Southside Travellers, to ensure that this happens. In tandem, the award winning "Happiness" and "Around the Block" art pieces produced by our young people will be on display in County Hall from next Monday. A large group of us will be attending the launch, we hope to see you there.

Education and Training Unit Almost Complete(11/01/2012)

Our renovation work to design our neweducation and training unitwhich will house our enhanced TASK Programme and provide a space for us to provide adult and community education opportunities for Travellers in DLR is almost complete. Thanks to the excellent Project Management skills of Chris McDonagh (Cleaning Services Ireland and Board Member) and the work of Gavin and Willy, the space is now at the painting stage. We look forward to moving in and making TASK even more of a success in 2012. Thanks to DLR County Council and Southside Partnership for providing the funding to complete this phase of our resource centre refurbishment. Phase (II) will focus on upgrading our Children and Young People's facilities and finally, Phase (III) will enhance our core resource centre space. Fingers crossed, its been a long road....

Advocacy and Accomodation Programme (11/01/2012)

With the return of our Programme Manager (Katy Quayle) from Maternity Leave and Biddy Doran now in post as Advocacy and Accomodation Officer and Traveller Representative on the LTACC, the programme is, according to Katy "positively galvanised"  (!) and looking forward to making a difference in 2012. The new space should help too, so, a programme is now in place to:

·         Establish advice and information clinics - using outside services & thereby increasing drop-in by Community members and better utilising Centre resources

·         Continue to strengthen relationship with outside partners & DLR County Council Traveller Accomodation Unit

·         Network / build relationships with Local TD's

·         Bring issues of local concern to national fora through the ITM Accomodation Working Group

·         Continue to provide support and advice on one-to-one basis

Contact Katy or Biddy for more information
